Liberal MP Zoe McKenzie says “every effort was made” to get the Labor government’s detainee bill through. Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil has accused the Opposition of playing politics after the Albanese government failed to secure emergency removal powers for non-citizens. The Opposition and Greens in the Senate rejected the government’s urgency with the bill and referred the laws to a parliamentary inquiry for scrutiny. “Interestingly, the draft legislation was given to the Coalition on Tuesday,” Ms McKenzie told Sky News Australia. “Every effort was made to get it through.”
